The Prague Loreto is one of the most important Marian pilgrimage sites in Bohemia and comprises a Baroque complex of buildings on Loreto Square in Hradčany. At its centre stands the Holy House – a faithful replica of the house of the Virgin Mary in Nazareth, where, according to tradition, the Archangel Gabriel announced the birth of Jesus to her. According to legend, angels transported this house from the Holy Land first to Loreto in Italy, from where veneration of it spread throughout Europe. The Prague version was built in the 17th century (construction began in 1626).
